Adding Your Experiences to Your Cv
Qualifications or experience-which is more important?
My short answer to that question is, "that all depends on the kind of job you are applying for."
There is no size fits all in virtually everything in life, that includes your CV. It all depends on what job you are applying for and how relevant qualifications or past experience is. Past experience will get you a foot in the door with most jobs, however if you lack experience then you may have to use a different approach.
Let me tell you a story:
My nephew was working on dairy farms in Mid Canterbury(New Zealand). He had years of experience. He moved to the West Coast to work on a dairy farm near Harihari for a season. My nephew had absolutely no qualifications; he is a hands on person. What he does have is lots of experience. A lad started work at the dairy farm. This guy had qualifications which he gained at Polytech. The qualifications were to do with farming, but my nephew who had no qualifications but tons of experience was showing this new guy the ropes.
If you are a hands on person then this needs to be pointed out in your CV.
Having said that, in many jobs you can be hired without being asked to present a CV to an employer. It still pays though to have an up to date CV ready just in case you are asked for it.
Someone with no qualifications can highlight other valued qualities which the employer will find an asset to his/her business.
It pays to think of those qualities which you used in your last job.
OVER QUALIFIED
It may pay to leave out some of your achievements from your CV if it is not relevant to the position you are applying for. If you have gained qualifications which suggest that you are able to get a job with more pay than the one you are applying for then the prospective employer may have reason to believe that you will only be working in the job temporarily until something better comes along, which may not necessarily suit him or her.
An employer who is seeking a long-term commitment is less likely to hire someone who they believe may not stick around for too long.
NON WORK RELATED EXPERIENCE
Non-work related experience can be just as relevant to an employer as previous jobs you have done. If you have a hobby which demands the type of skills an employer is after then this is relevant.
